What are pokemon chase cards?

In the Pokémon Trading Card Game (TCG), chase cards refer to the most desirable and sought-after cards from a particular set. These are the cards that collectors and players actively seek, often because of their rarity, value, or unique characteristics. Chase cards typically hold higher market prices and are considered treasures within a collection.

Here’s what defines a chase card:

  1. Rarity: Chase cards are usually rare, ultra-rare, secret rare, or hyper rare cards. Examples include Full Art, Rainbow Rare, VMAX, VSTAR, or Secret Rare cards, which are harder to pull from booster packs.

  2. Special Features: Many chase cards have unique designs, such as holographic finishes, gold borders, or alternate art. Alternate Art cards (which have distinctive artwork compared to standard versions) are often considered chase cards.

  3. Popular Pokémon: Chase cards frequently feature fan-favorite or iconic Pokémon like Charizard, Pikachu, Mewtwo, Rayquaza, or Eevee and its evolutions. Charizard cards, in particular, are almost always chase cards in any set that includes them.

  4. High Collectible Value: Chase cards usually have a high resale value on the secondary market due to their rarity and demand. Collectors often spend large amounts of money or open many booster packs hoping to find these specific cards.

  5. Limited Availability: Some chase cards may be part of limited edition or promotional releases, making them even harder to obtain and increasing their desirability.

For example, in the Evolving Skies set, the Umbreon VMAX (Alternate Art) is considered a major chase card due to its stunning artwork and popularity among collectors. Similarly, in the Shining Fates set, the Shiny Charizard VMAX was one of the most sought-after chase cards.

Chase cards play a big role in the excitement of opening packs, as players and collectors hope to "chase" these rare finds.
